Jack Johnson – To The Sea

by on Jul.31, 2010, under Music/Artist Review

Since it’s release about a month ago, Jack Johnson’s new CD To The Sea has been getting rave reviews.  Now that the initial hype has died down, let’s talk about what makes the album so good.  Let’s begin with Jack Johnson and how he fits into today’s musical landscape.  Music today is centered around what’s new and what’s hot, focusing on the upcoming pop star and their respective scandals.  However, I see the industry moving into the next phase, which is back to rock.  Does Jack Johnson fit into the rock genre? Or is he a pop singer?  I believe the answer is neither, but he does fit in somewhere: Margaritaville.

He is the Jimmy Buffet of today’s generation, with signature sounds perfect for almost any occasion.  The new album is aptly titled To The Sea because it’s great for just chilling out at the beach.  While this album involves more studio sounds than Johnson’s previous acoustic-based work, it still stays true to his sound.  The album works off of it’s title and brings the beach to you.  It begins with “No Good With Faces,” a song with a playful nature, and continues to be a great listen from beginning to end.

Do you think Jack Johnson is the next Jimmy Buffet?

What do you think about his new album?
