Jack Johnson – To The Sea
by Todd on Jul.31, 2010, under Music/Artist Review
Since it’s release about a month ago, Jack Johnson’s new CD To The Sea has been getting rave reviews. Now that the initial hype has died down, let’s talk about what makes the album so good. Let’s begin with Jack Johnson and how he fits into today’s musical landscape. Music today is centered around what’s new and what’s hot, focusing on the upcoming pop star and their respective scandals. However, I see the industry moving into the next phase, which is back to rock. Does Jack Johnson fit into the rock genre? Or is he a pop singer? I believe the answer is neither, but he does fit in somewhere: Margaritaville.
He is the Jimmy Buffet of today’s generation, with signature sounds perfect for almost any occasion. The new album is aptly titled To The Sea because it’s great for just chilling out at the beach. While this album involves more studio sounds than Johnson’s previous acoustic-based work, it still stays true to his sound. The album works off of it’s title and brings the beach to you. It begins with “No Good With Faces,” a song with a playful nature, and continues to be a great listen from beginning to end.
Do you think Jack Johnson is the next Jimmy Buffet?
What do you think about his new album?

Alexx Calise – Amazing New Artist
by Todd on Jul.22, 2010, under Music/Artist Review
I had the opportunity to listen to a great new CD the other day. The artist is Alexx Calise and her new album “In Avanti” is in a word Amazing! Her music is in heavy rotation right now on several MTV/VH1 reality programs and has been featured in such magazines as Guitar World, Singer and Musician, and Blender. Alexx is no stranger to the road either, having toured pretty much all over the U.S. already while promoting her first album Morning Pill. So if you don’t know her work yet, this sophomore album will surely supplant her as one of the top Female acts.
The whole album has a solid synth rock sound with great lyrics. The lead single “Break Me” has great radio quality and isn’t even the best song on the CD. The album was produced by Grammy-nominated producer, Luigie Gonzalez. At first glance you might see a “rocker chick” and compare her to Orianthi, but Alexx has talent that makes her so much more. Her sound has an amazing rock edge but will also play perfectly in mainstream radio. What makes her better as an artist is the lyrics and how well they fit with the music. I can actually hear a story in the songs. The tracks almost play a small movie inside your head because the words flow so perfectly. I would highly recommend this album and you can pick it up from her site. www.alexxcalise.net. You can also listen to or pick up her previous album “Morning Pill” on Amazon MP3 by clicking here.

Stone Temple Pilots
by Todd on Jun.02, 2010, under Music/Artist Review
Stone Temple Pilots released their self titled album after a 9 year break. While the group was working on side projects such as Velvet Revolver and getting cleaned up from drugs they were also plotting their comeback. The group released the album at the perfect time as rock makes it’s come back into the main stream. The group will receive good airplay from rock and pop stations for “Stone Temple Pilots.” The album has it’s high moments but is not the drug fueled STP of old. The song that truly shows the new side is “Cinnamon.” “Cinnamon” is a very mellow slow song fresh of the cookie cutter pop sheet. Listening to the song “First Kiss on Mars” you would think it changed to a country album. I don’t want to take anything from the album because it does have great songs, but to me it feels like it lacks the edge of what was STP.

The Dead Weather – Sea of Cowards
by Todd on Jun.01, 2010, under Music News, Music/Artist Review
The Dead Weather‘s new album has come out sooner than expected and is a great buy. The group has such a unique sound that producing 11 new tracks so quickly is amazing. The album has a similar flow as the first and still has the groups signature sound. The group is wasting no time by starting a European/U.S. tour. The Dead Weather’ s first performance is Bonnaroo in Tennessee on June 12. They have been doing a lot of PR for the new album putting day of concerts on in different cities. The group also did a live web feed of all tracks prior to the release. If you do or don’t like this group it’s evident they will be around for a while.
